5 Tips from Summer Regional Chapter Roundtables

Check out the helpful tips that our members shared at this quarter’s CSN member Roundtables:

1. Community spaces are natural homes for resilience hubs.
As communities face increasing challenges from extreme weather, public health emergencies, and other disruptions, resilience hubs are becoming an important strategy for preparedness and response. Existing community spaces are uniquely positioned to serve this role. These spaces are often centrally located, accessible, and already trusted by community members. Rather than creating entirely new infrastructure, organizations can build on the relationships, programs, and facilities they already have in place to strengthen community resilience.

2. Make data collection part of everyday operations.
Collecting meaningful data can be challenging when staff and partners are balancing many responsibilities. Members shared that embedding surveys or QR codes into events, offering small incentives, and collecting feedback at natural touchpoints can increase response rates. It’s also important to share results back with partners and stakeholders. When people see how their input is being used, they are often more willing to participate in the future.

3. Recognize that engagement looks different for everyone.
Building community isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Members shared creative ways to engage partners by connecting around interests people already have, such as crafting, sports, entertainment, or local events. Others highlighted the value of creating low-pressure opportunities for participation, such as “introvert corners” at gatherings or activities that allow people to drop in briefly without a major commitment. Leveraging current events like the World Cup or popular cultural moments can also provide easy conversation starters and common ground. The key is creating multiple pathways for people to connect in ways that feel comfortable and authentic to them.

4. Define partnerships with clarity and intention.
Members discussed the importance of being clear about why a partnership exists, what outcomes are expected, and who is responsible for what. Clearly defining roles and responsibilities helps ensure collaboration leads to action rather than confusion. As organizations grow and staff turnover occurs, it can also be helpful to document expectations, decision-making processes, and shared values. Codifying these practices helps preserve organizational culture and provides a roadmap for future partners.

5. Use art to extend your community impact.
Murals, gallery spaces, and other public art initiatives can strengthen connections with the broader community. Art can activate underutilized areas, create a stronger sense of place, and invite new audiences into community spaces. These projects can also open doors to partnerships with artists, cultural organizations, tourism groups, and local businesses. By showcasing local creativity, organizations can expand their community footprint while fostering pride and belonging among residents and visitors alike.
