Member Highlight: Teal Street Center

Teal Street Center (TSC) is a multi-tenant nonprofit facility designed to offer accessible, coordinated social services in Juneau, Alaska. The 12,400 sq. ft. project will be the permanent home for eight nonprofit organizations that serve seniors, those experiencing physical or mental health disabilities, at-risk youth, veterans, cancer patients, and low-income individuals and families.

TSC is designed to be a social services hub set in the heart of a high-needs population. Our building will be adjacent to Juneau’s newly opened homeless shelter. Transitional and low-income senior housing units are on the opposite side of our project.

TSC is the culmination of nearly two decades of work toward a shared nonprofit space in Juneau. We have completed site preparation and are securing grants and other funding to break ground in September, with the goal of opening our doors in fall 2022.

What is one interesting fact about your space?

We realized early in the design process that we would not have enough space to accommodate every social service provider or organization in Juneau. In order to broaden our offerings to clientele, we included a flex space that will house additional providers on a regular schedule. Employment services, adult education, aids prevention programs and housing navigation will all be available through the flex space. In addition, we’ll host a mobile medicine van twice a week in our parking lot to provide basic medical, vaccines and mental health. The flex room will help Teal Street Center provide those coordinated, wrap-around services that will make this hub successful.

What are your favorite resources that you would recommend to others?

Teal Street Center is a project of the United Human Services of SE Alaska (UHS), a longtime member of NCN. Over the many years of our journey, UHS has tapped into a number of valuable NCN resources. UHS board and staff have traveled to NCN face-to-face conferences/training to gain inspiration and guidance and to tour other centers. NCN consultants traveled to Juneau, Alaska, and proved helpful in facilitating a community forum and the vetting of two options for relocation/expansion. We also recommend taking NCN up on the hour of consulting that comes with NCN membership–these folks have been around the block! Lastly, the newly minted virtual regional cohorts are proving a good way to learn from one another–thank you NCN!
